5 Simple Tips for using Google Hangouts
The growth of Google Hangouts since the inception of Google+ has been tremendous. Whether you are the host running the Hangout or a guest on a Hangout, there are some critical pieces you don’t want to overlook.
#1: Use a headset
Does this mean you have to go out and purchase these items? Not necessarily. The headsets that come with the iPhone can even work well. I typically just use that for a headset and it can be used for a microphone too. By using a headset, you will decrease the echo that can be heard when the talking comes through your computer, so it makes for a much better listening experience for all.
#2: Use a Microphone
Because I host a show, I opted to purchase a professional mic. The one I chose is the Yeti. There are numerous types of microphones out there that work just fine. Many even just use the mic that is built in right on their headset and it works great!
#3: Use a good camera
As for the camera, some laptops come with wonderful cameras, so if you are so lucky, then you are all set. Once again, I decided to purchase this item because of hosting a weekly show. The one I chose here is the Logitech Webcam C930e.
#4: Log into the Hangout via Chrome
Well, let’s see…Chrome is Google’s Browser, not Firefox, Safari or Internet Explorer. So, it makes sense that a Google Hangout would prefer Chrome. It just works more seamlessly. The other reason to use Chrome is they offer the Hangout Toolbox with Chrome add-ons. With these you can create what they call the ‘Bottom 1/3’ (see below) and other cool features.
#5: Use a Hard-Wired Internet Connection
A hard wired connection is better than a wifi connection. Since hangouts us a lot of bandwidth, it is better to have a direct connection. This will help you to not drop off so that you don’t lose the hangout altogether. This is a simple fix, but can be a critical mistake if not done.
Some additional other simple tips:
- Make sure you are logged into your Gmail account (may sound too simple, but it has come up)
- Avoid additional noise around you
- Don’t have a bunch of junk behind you – try to keep behind you clean
- Have the lighting in front of you, not behind you if possible
- Login early in case there are any issues getting in
The above items are a very simplified list of how to make your Google Hangout Experience a Success. Keep this checklist handy for the next time you host or are a guest on someone else’s hangout. 🙂
